The survey aimed to build a detailed picture of New Zealanders' sexual identities, habits, attitudes and behaviours. Sinderellas Adult Shop director Vanessa Scully said the swinging popularity in the city did not surprise her and often customers would ask if she knew of any swingers clubs in the city.
A lot of them tended to be out-of-towners. When the shop opened it had a small corner dedicated to fetish, but after the book's publication it had an entire wall of it and products were selling fast, she said. The book had also prompted some people to buy products to start their own "Red Room of Pain," she said. A "Red Room of Pain" is a room with bondage paraphernalia and sex toys. The latest trend Mrs Scully had noticed was an increase in cross-dressers and the sale of whips.
Coco Bella manager Chrissy Sherborne also said the popularity of swinging in the city did not surprise her. Customers would sometimes ask if she knew of anywhere or anyone, she said. Ms Sherborne also agreed Fifty Shades of Grey had boosted business. The latest trend she had noticed was also an increase in cross-dressers. Both sex shop managers and an Invercargill brothel spokeswoman spoken to yesterday said they did not know of any swingers clubs in Invercargill.
